Maintenance

Just like any other transportation vehicle, the Faraday Spine should be kept in good shape. In general there are 5 main things to be aware of:

  • Driving belt (rubber)
  • Front/back axle screws
  • Spine unit (Box) screws
  • Small stones (unwanted intruders)
  • 3D Printed parts

1. Driving belt (check every week)

The driving belt is critical for the function of the Spine, and needs to be checked regularly. It will wear off with use and needs to be replaced in some cases. Find ways to prolong the life of your driving belt on the Faraday Forums.

Front/back axle screws (check before driving)

The big axle screws connecting the board to the trucks needs to be double checked before every ride. It will result in speed wobble if they are not tight and it can throw off riders! If the axle screws become loose too often, use Loctite.

3. Spine Unit screws (check every week)

Be aware that the screws holding the spine unit together could potentially become loose over time due to continuous turbulent movement on uneven roads etc. Make sure to check up once a month and use Locktite in case of repeated problems.

4. Small stones (check every second week)

Open the Spine Unit (motor box) every other month, or if strange noises start to appear from the spine unit when driving. Check for any small stones etc. that can be damaging the motors or electronics. They have their mysterious ways of appearing inside otherwise seemingly closed compartments.

5. 3D printed parts (check before driving)

The Spine Unit is held together and supported by 3D printed plastic parts (PLA), which are potentially less strong/durable than regular plastics. Make sure to check up on the condition of the parts before going for a ride, especially those parts that are critical to movement - such as the gear, motor bracket as well as battery compartment parts. Replace immediately when damaged. All STL files + future design upgrades are downloadable for free on www.faradaymotion.com.
